Us as a chapter and as a field I think transcends health that’s something we’re always mindful of in all of the work we do when we see planning departments getting shut down or minimized we need to continually communicate the value of planning so specifically on the health issue again I think elected
Officials understand quality of life they may or may not choose to use those terms but if their constituents are feeling that decline in quality of health that’s when you get phone calls emails angry Town Hall’s so I think as the chapter works on planners for health and assesses its own capacity to
Support the integration of health and planning in Illinois we’re going to have to have that piece where we not only figure out how to do it but then communicate it to our allied professionals the general public and in particular elected officials so our three plan for health communities we’re
Really inspiring and they were already up and running and functioning when plan for health came around what plan for health allowed them to do is sort of take their work to the next level and with planners for health it’s really on me and the Illinois chapter to find ways
To support the replication of that work so where existing coalition’s exist I think the focus will be finding ways to help them take their work to the next level and in some communities it’s going to be building a coalition from the ground I think there’s an interesting opportunity for the planning profession
As a whole to take a step back and maybe realize that we don’t have to jump on to whatever the latest topic is the latest bandwagon but if we reinforce our value as far as helping the most vulnerable being sort of human centered an emphasis on community engagement and process
Those are really unique to planning when compared to our allied professionals and if we can as a chapter sort of institutionalized that process that approach the value of what we’re doing I think no matter the topic but clearly I’m here to try it out on health first
That we’re seen as a resource we’re seen as the go-to people in this goal of improved quality of life healthier communities great communities so that if five years from now we’re facing something completely different or we’ve already solved the health issues of all our communities were positioned to take
Those on so I think that what I’ve learned from our plan for health communities is that the the work takes time it’s very place-based community specific and I’m not just trying to throw out buzzwords but relationships are important we’ve got to nurture and support those coalition’s because they have a life a
Lifetime and they’re not a static thing and that’s something the Illinois chapter can do we’re 1,500 strong across the state we’ve got everything from small farm communities to you know one of the country’s biggest cities so if we can be respectful of the context of the community but replicate that work that’s
