قسمتی از متن فیلم: Helped by design is the coalition that formed in 2006 and works at the intersection of the built environment in public health so we work around the state of Indiana ensuring that our public spaces our transportation systems and our neighborhood design promote physical activity and public health and

So since the beginning was really about bringing planners public health professionals and other community partners together in a way that again would support Public Health by using a policy systems and environmental change approach to improving our built environment plan for a health opportunity through the American Planning Association and the American

Public Health Association with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided a fantastic opportunity to advance the work of health by design so we obviously had an existing coalition structure we’d been doing work for a number of years but this really gave us the opportunity to

Focus in on one specific project that frankly had been we’ve been waiting for the opportunity to to do and provided the funding and additional technical support for us to do so with that project we focused on the city of Indianapolis specifically it was a partnership between health by design the

City of Indianapolis and the Marion County Public Health Department and really the entire project was around improving walkability for within Indianapolis and encouraging people to walk more and we did that through three primary strategies one was the development of an overall pedestrian program within the city structure so

There has been a lot of work around bicycling over the years and increasing momentum around that we have a within Indianapolis we have a fantastic foundation for walking particularly in our downtown area but um an emphasis on walking on safety on access was is a really important piece and so

Establishing that pedestrian program allows us to do that we also have never had an Indianapolis and adopted pedestrian plan and so one of the main things we did with the funding from plan for health was to develop again the city’s first pedestrian plan we worked with the consultant team from

Nelson Nygaard and and had a fantastic experience and a process with a process that really allowed us to think about the future of walking in Indianapolis and then the third thing that we did was to really think about promotion of walking and how we encourage people to walk more so having the infrastructure

In place is one thing but we’re also trying to create a culture where walking is the norm where people think to walk to go to lunch or to dinner or to walk to the park or to walk to church as opposed to just hopping in the car especially when it’s a short distance

And so as part of this project overall we launched a campaign called walkways which was really the brand for all of this pedestrian work in Indianapolis and we’re used that both to engage the public in the planning process but also to launch a series of walks that are

Taking place around the city and we’ll continue to do so and to do some other aspects of promoting walking the main thing that the pedestrian planning process allowed us to do is to really think about how we prioritize the funding that we do have and that we do spend year-to-year with in Indianapolis

To improve walkability so like basically all cities particularly large metropolitan areas we do not have enough money to take care of all of the sidewalk and pedestrian infrastructure need that we have we’re we we have a fraction of it a very tiny amount in in terms of our identified in need and so

It’s extremely important that we think about where we spend those dollars so that we know we’re using them in the wisest way possible and so the planning process allowed us again to really think about a data-driven methodology for picking projects and that really was a is a two-fold process first of all we

Looked at a number of data points in terms of their geography around the city layer those things together with an emphasis on health factor equity factors and safety and then also looked at things like existing infrastructure and the condition of that destinations where you would expect people to be walking and some other

Aspects of city priorities and when you layer all of those maps together you end up with these essentially hotspots or priority areas that arise and so that allowed us to think geographically in terms of where within the city based on all of those factors there’s a need to invest in walkability
