A group of 30 organisations, including councils, housebuilders, housing associations, charities, business groups and planners, have written to the Secretary of State for the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Michael Gove urging him to not proceed with the government’s proposed Infrastructure Levy.
The government intends to replace the current developer contributions system, which includes S106 and the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), with a new Infrastructure Levy.
The signatories warn that this new Levy could reduce the amount of money available for affordable and social rent homes while prolonging uncertainty, perpetuating regional inequalities and deepening the housing crisis. They have urged government to reform the current developer contributions system instead and have offered to support the department using their collective experience and expertise.
