After her teaching career McCoy worked in private practice advising communities on comprehensive plans that balanced growth with conservation she also served on the Planning Commission of La Habra Heights California where she lived she fought vociferously for the protection of canyons in the La Habra Heights area
And over the years got to see many of those open spaces protected McCoy was an advocate for greater citizen involvement in the planning process she chaired a citizen’s review committee that stopped an ill-conceived people-mover project for downtown Los Angeles she also developed a master plan for managing California’s coastline she
Became known for her efforts to advance women and minorities in the planning profession and to reach deep into communities to represent their concerns as well at the time of her death in 2016 at the age of 92 margarita McCoy’s influence had played a key role in the increasing number of women and
Minorities entering the planning profession serving on the APA board of directors McCoy helped found its Planning and women’s division she also served as president of the AICP Commission and held leadership positions at the planning Accreditation Board and the Association of collegiate schools of planning a mentor for many planning practitioners and decades-long advocate
For the profession Margarita’s legacy will live on for many years she understood how the world worked and was an expert at figuring out the next step to make practical progress forward margarita McCoy mastered the dance of idealism and realism that’s essential to effective planning practice the American Planning Association is
