Title:What’s in the 2019 Housing Policy Guide
This one really addresses a lot of more current affairs and current issues including issues related to housing finance the dynamics of which have changed over 13 years so finance was a big one I’d say the other big challenge and issue that we wanted to address in 2019 compared to 2006 was related to
Zoning so modernizing state codes as well as modernizing local codes and then I guess the last one would be the issue of resiliency trying to incorporate sustainability practice into the practice of thinking about housing whether it’s creating new housing or preservation of housing planning home was a great first step and really the
The the way in which we started moving into the real policy creation for the housing policy guide and so planning home deals with I think 5 issues topically where both the Association and then planners can dive deep on specific matters we took that those principles and then those policies and integrated
Them into the policy guide so very much it was a springboard for a lot of the policies but then we added additional topics that we wanted to make sure also had some supportive policies we heard pretty repeatedly from the membership how important the topic of housing was
And how they needed guidance from the Association about how to really address that issue the Housing Policy guide and really any policy guide is for everybody certainly for the membership I hope every single member actually reads and engages with the policy positions that we espouse through APA I think that’s
Critically important both from the perspective of being able to better advocate for planning policy at the national level but also finding ways to tailor that accordingly at the state level and even at the local level of course the most important population to engage with our policy guides would be
People who make policy we want to be able to take those policy guides and make meaningful policy advocate for meaningful policy and of course amend policies that exist I think that the way in which that membership can utilize the Warren adopted policy guide in order to move forward with changes the first part
Is actually talking about it at the chapter level and finding a way to integrate that into the conversation if it’s not already happening is really important because planners on their own can do only so much but I think working together through chapters is very important to advocating for broader
Planning principles I think we’re facing really true threats to housing availability and affordability and I think planners play a critical role in finding a way to address those issues so for me being involved in the policy guide drafting process meant finding way to lift up as many of those stories
About how people are doing it across the country distill it into best practices that then translate into good policy
