Title:Equity Doesn’t Happen by Accident
My earliest introduction to social equity as a planner was living through the social unrest of newark new jersey what that experience said to me is there some must be something going on that explains why large groups of individuals in my community are so upset and looking around
The nation and looking that only nork wasn’t on fire but lots of other cities were also on fire in the 60s around various social justice and civil rights issues and so my earliest introduction was really as a child trying to understand what was going on around me and why in a country
That allegedly all men are created equal and endowed by the creator with certain inalienable rights that people felt that they didn’t have any rights knowing that those contradictions exist and what we consider to be a democratic society and resolving those contradictions i would argue would be one of the jobs of planners
It’s essential for planners to think critically about social equity because our system is built to be inequitable and if you think about the founding of america you think about the dispossession of native americans you think about slavery you think about the subordination of women we have institutions in our democratic society
That have emboldened and often reproduced them and they’ve over time been reproduced in various different institutional context policies processes the like and so for us as planners we have the responsibility of understanding that where we’ve come from requires us to be ever vigilant about the work that we have before us
Because if we’re not we end up being complicit in the process one of the critical pieces that we have to recognize is is that we as planners are really operatives to perfect our democracy and if we don’t appreciate where we’ve been in the structures that have been replicated over time
To continue to push us back where we’ve been instead of where we need to go we’re going to be in trouble we have the responsibility to be hypersensitive about equity issues because if we’re not it’s not going to happen it doesn’t happen by accident democracy is not a spectator sport
Young planners need to organize themselves because the planning process can be brutal and you should not be in that process alone so you should be engaged regularly with supportive community members supportive professionals others who can work with you to advance some of the initiatives and things that you’re interested in supporting for the
Community and if planners do that they gain a few things they gain a supportive infrastructure upon which they can do their work they begin to be more self-reflective about the opportunities that that work can create for making change and finally they become more effective because they’re working across institutions they’re working with
Individuals to advance that change part of the work that you have to do is to understand communities and be able to appreciate and allow the planning process to cross that threshold of pain that communities experience and once you’re able to understand what that pain looks like what it feels like and how people
Process it you’re going to be able to do much more effective planning but that requires one recognizing your individual strengths and weaknesses in that regard culturally and otherwise and also requires you to have a kind of a willingness to submit if you will to the community context and and learn
From that community context about how change happens and what people view as what change should look like and how their community should feel and be
